Chapter Six

Not only had Ry not asked Tallie out on a real date after the parenting class on Thursday night, but she hadn’t seen or heard from him at all on Friday.

Saturday passed making house calls to people on outlying farms and ranches, and as she headed home late that afternoon she realized that that lack of contact with Ry was not helping to get him off her mind any more than the attempts she made to distract herself from thoughts of him. In fact the man seemed to have taken up such permanent residence in her head that she should have been charging him rent.

She drove through the open countryside, past furrowed cornfields, fields lush with winter wheat ready for harvesting, and fenced fields where cattle grazed peacefully. As she did, she replayed Thursday night over and over again in her head—the way she’d been doing since he’d left her at her door.

It wasn’t as if talking to him about the attraction they seemed to share for each other had helped anything. She still didn’t understand what was going on. With him or with herself.

He’d shown a little jealousy—which had been flattering. He’d said outright that he wanted to get to know her better. That he’d noticed her all along, even when she’d thought he hadn’t. That he liked what he saw.

So if all that was true, why hadn’t he made any moves to see her again? Formally? Why hadn’t he asked her to dinner? Or out for a drive after he put Andrew to bed Friday night? Why hadn’t she heard from him at all in the past two days?

It just didn’t make any sense to her.

And what was it that he was sorting through the same way she was sorting through the residual baggage of her last relationship? she wondered. As far as she knew, Ry hadn’t been involved with anyone recently. At least not with anyone in Elk Creek. And not with anyone known by anyone she talked to. In fact, by all accounts, not one of the single women in town who’d tried to start something up with him had had any success. So what was he sorting through?

Maybe he’d been referring to Andrew.

But in rehashing the conversation, Tallie felt sure the implication had been about a romantic relationship, not about the complications of inheriting the baby. She just couldn’t figure out whom he might have been involved with. Or why he was so closemouthed about it.

Was he hiding something? Ashamed of something? Was he only playing mystery man? Or was it just another way of keeping her at arm’s length?

Not that he really kept her at arm’s length in any other respect. Certainly not when it came to kissing her good-night. Oh no, then he pulled her in plenty close.

Close enough to get her hopes up that when the kiss ended it wouldn’t be the last she’d hear from him. Or have from him...

She just didn’t know what it was he wanted.

Not that she knew what she wanted, either, she admitted.
